History of Kranberry Acres
Leslie and Ethel Kranick bought the cranberry farm in 1917. It is one of the original cranberry farms in Oregon, with a bog still in production that was built in the late 1800s.
Leslie and Ethel had one son, Martin Kranick, who was born in 1920. The farm name is Kranberry Acres, Inc. It has been run by three generations of Kranicks.
Kranberry Acres has existed through several ways of picking cranberries. When Leslie bought the farm, they hand picked cranberries. The farm employed more than 100 people at harvest who got down on their hands and knees and picked each cranberry by hand.
They had also used various pickers, such as a vacuum picker, western picker, furford picker, scoops in water and without water; they saw the invention of the push behind water beater and the harvest elevator. They now use the ride on water beater.
Kranberry Acres once used airplane propellers for handling frost at night. The idea was that they would blow warmer air from above down onto the cranberries to warm them up.
