Local clergy bless the harvest each year

clergy bless the harvest each year

An age-old custom, dating back to antiquity, will take place at the Russell Farm on Friday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. Local clergy will offer blessings for the upcoming harvest of cranberries, and for the farmers who depend on the cranberry harvest for their livelihoods.

The Russell Farm was selected as the site for the event because of its easy accessibility to the public at the intersection of U.S. Highway 101 and Randolph Road, about five miles north of Bandon.

One of the blessings will include the pouring of cranberry juice into the ground as a symbolic way of returning to the Earth a portion of its produce, much as wine is returned to the ground at the opening of the grape harvest in California's Napa Valley.

The public is encouraged to attend as an act of solidarity with the cranberry farmers.
